Library Internet Policies This section outlines policies and procedures for Internet access and usage in Clarence Regional Library branches. [ Back to Index ] [ Back to Top ] Overview The aims of the policy are to : Promote the use of the Internet as a research and educational tool. Promote fair distribution of Internet access amongst patrons of the Clarence Regional Library. Promote freedom of information. Protect the libraries resources. This include limiting liability. Promote the responsibility of the user when using electronic resources.  [ Back to Index ] [ Back to Top ] Penalties Serious breaches of the Conditions of Use and policies may result in the removal of access to that patron or prosecution by the relevant authorities where appropriate. [ Back to Index ] [ Back to Top ] Responsibility of the User Children's Use of The Internet. Parent's and Guardian's of children please read the " Parent's Guide To The Internet" Children's use of the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Any material viewed by children whilst using the Internet is the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian. Computer Viruses. Material being downloaded from the Internet to floppy disks may contain viruses. These viruses may cause damage to a network or computer. It is the responsibility of the patron to check any downloaded material on floppy disks prior to installing any software onto their own hard drive. The Clarence Regional Library accepts no responsibility for any damage caused as a result of downloaded viruses or other software. Offensive and/or Erroneous Material. Any material that is erroneous or may be considered offensive in nature to the user or patrons of the library is the sole responsibility of the user. The library accepts no responsibility for patrons viewing material which may be deemed offensive. The library also accepts no responsibility for the validity of information on the Internet. Ethical Use. Access to terminals shall be granted only on the grounds that they be used ethically. This prohibits unethical use such as unauthorised entry into other networks, accounts, breaking into network security, removing or damaging hardware etc. Courtesy to Staff and Terminals. Patrons are reminded that the Internet is a specialised tool. As a result staff members can not be expected to be experts in problems patrons may experience. Any form of abuse to terminals or staff as a result of any problems, or in general, will not be tolerated. [ Back to Index ] [ Back to Top ] Responsibility of Library The responsibilities of the Clarence Regional Library and its branches are to : Provide a copy of the Libraries policies where terminals are stationed. Provide assistance where required keeping in mind that the staff are not expected to be experts with relation to particular problems and that the user is responsible for their own search. Maintain user confidentiality and privacy unless as noted below. Provide records as requested by relevant authorities under state or federal law for criminal or investigatory purposes. The Clarence Regional Library cannot accept any responsibility for material or downloaded material (such as viruses) which may be offensive to the viewer or damaging to software or hardware if downloaded.
